Squirrel scouts are aged between 4 and 6.
2nd Oxford Squirrels opened on 25 May 2022 and has grown into a thriving Drey.
To celebrate the 5th Birthday of the roll out of Squirrel Scouts in 2026, all members of the Drey received a special birthday badge for their blankets!
Our Squirrel Drey meets on a Tuesday evening between 5.00 pm and 6.00 pm. They split their time between the Scout Hut and St Frieswide School Forest School
Spaces are limited, so to add your child to the waiting list please visit our Taking Part page.
Membership Award
When a young person joins the Squirrels Drey he or she will start by working towards the Squirrels Membership Award. This involves learning about the Drey and understanding the Squirrels Scout Promise. The young person will also find out about Scouting more generally and will learn about the Scout Motto, Sign and Handshake. He or she will usually attend at least four meetings before being invested as a Squirrel Scout.
Balanced Programme
Squirrel Scouts take part in a balanced programme which is split into six different programme zones (beliefs and attitudes; community; fitness; creative; global; and outdoor and adventure). The programme is delivered using twelve different methods. Over a period of time Squirrels will take part in activities which cover all of the zones and make use of all of the different methods.
After Squirrels have been invested they can start working towards the four Challenge Awards which complement the balanced programme.
Squirrel Scouts can also work towards twelve different activity badges and a number of staged activity badges.
Squirrels can also earn Joining In Badges to show how long they have been a part of the Scout Movement and a Moving On Award when they continue to Beaver Scouts.
If a Squirrel completes all four Challenges they earn the Acorn Award, the highest award available to Squirrel Scouts.
